Dr Mohammed Akhtar consultant interventional cardiologist at the Royal Brompton & Harefield hospitals. He specialises in general cardiology with subspeciality expertise in coronary and structural heart intervention
He is an expert in treating the following:
- angina
- coronary artery disease
- valvular heart disease
- hypertension
- palpitations
- breathlessness
- inherited cardiovascular diseases
He also performs:
- coronary angiogram and angioplasty (including intravascular imaging)
- transcatheter aortic valve implantation
- mitral transcatheter intervention
- right heart catheterisation
- pericardiocentesis
Biography
Dr Mohammed Akhtar completed his cardiology specialist interventional (coronary and TAVI) training at the Barts’ Heart Centre and have undertaken a post-CCT structural intervention fellowship in transcatheter mitral and tricuspid valve therapies at the Brompton Hospital prior to commencing his consultant post at the Royal Brompton & Harefield hospitals.
He is the current Education cardiology placement lead at Harefield hospital for undergraduate medical students from Imperial College London.
Research
Dr Akhtar is the the local principal investigator for several international randomised controlled trials and has multiple publications in reputable peer-reviewed international publications including the European Heart Journal, JACC and JAMA.
He has particular interest in real-world application of international guidelines with an aim to improve cardiovascular management in the community.
He has also presented at multiple international conferences including at the ESC (including in the late-breaking registries section) and at the American Heart Association, EuroPCR and at London Valves.
