Clinical expertise

Dr Wisam Alwan is a consultant dermatologist covering all aspects of general dermatology, and has a specialist interest in cutaneous infection.

He regularly treats patients with conditions such as:

  • acne
  • eczema
  • hidradenitis suppurativa
  • nail infections
  • psoriasis
  • rosacea
  • scars
  • skin cancer
  • skin infections (e.g. bacterial, viral, fungal)
  • viral warts

He performs treatments such as:

  • biopsy of skin lesions/rashes
  • cryotherapy for pre-cancerous skin lesions, viral warts, and verrucae
  • mole checks and removal
  • skin cancer screening and surgical excision
  • removal of symptomatic benign skin lesions (e.g. seborrhoeic keratoses)
  • scar removal treatment

Biography

Dr Wisam Alwan is a consultant dermatologist at the internationally renowned St John’s Institute of Dermatology, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.  He serves as clinical lead for children’s dermatology, and dermatology lead for the cutaneous infection clinic. Dr Alwan is also committed to medical education, serving as an educational supervisor and holding a postgraduate qualification in clinical education.

He completed his undergraduate training at St. George’s, University of London and undertook his dermatology training at the St John’s Institute of Dermatology and University Hospital Lewisham.  He took time out of his dermatology training to undertake a PhD at King’s College London, which he completed in 2024.  He has won a number of national and international prizes including awards from the British Association of Dermatologists, American Academy of Dermatology, Emirates Dermatology Society and the National Institute for Health and Care Research.


Research

Alongside Dr Wisam Alwan’s clinical work, he is an active researcher with a specialist interest in the skin microbiome. His PhD, completed at King’s College London, explored the role of commensal skin bacteria in conditions such as psoriasis and eczema and was supported by the Medical Research Council, the British Association of Dermatologists, and the British Skin Foundation.

His research has earned national recognition, including awards from the Royal Society of Medicine and the British Society of Investigative Dermatology. Dr Alwan has contributed to numerous clinical trials and published widely in respected journals, including Cell Host & Microbe and the British Journal of Dermatology.  He was recently a co-applicant to a £2.7m grant awarded to undertake a clinical trial of a novel drug-device combination for the treatment of fungal nail infections.
